Introduction:Cable News Network (CNN), the world's first ever 24-hour news channel was launched in June 1980 with its headquarters in Atlanta. The brainchild of Ted Turner (an Atlanta-based business tycoon),CNN dominated the cable news market for nearly 15 years with its speed in news coverage. With its non-stop coverage of the Persian Gulf War, CNN attained the peak of popularity in 1991. CNN also launched other specialized channels dealing with sports and international news apart from related Internet sites. By 2002, CNN reached about 88 million homes in the United States and operated from 37 bureaus around the world. However, the advent of Rupert Murdoch's 'Fox News Channel' in 1996 triggered the downslide for CNN in terms of viewership. At the same time, many other cable networks also introduced round the clock news channels undermining the supremacy of CNN in cable news network. It was never the same for CNN there after, with Fox adopting novel approaches to draw audience away from CNN. CNN's viewership declined gradually to 52% in 2003, placing it second to FoxNews in ratings. The gap between Fox's and CNN's profits which was 40%(CNN on the higher side) in 2003 also reduced to 20% by the end of 2004. After 25 years of existence, CNN in 2005 is working towards a reorganisation to improve the quality of its reporting, overcome the competition and countering the allegation of reflecting Liberal ideology.
